LED (light emitting diode) and LCD (liquid crystal display) screens sound fundamentally different on the surface. In reality though, both displays are liquid crystal displays,the real difference is in the backlighting. Contrary to a popular misconception, both LED and LCD TVs use LCD technology in the display; however, they differ in the ways they illuminate the TV screen so you can see the picture the LCDs are creating.
Background
Liquid crystal display, or LCD, technology uses millions of pixels filled with liquid crystal that open and close when an electrical current is passed through them. Together, these pixels create the image displayed on the screen.
Benefits
The LED backlight can be dimmed and brightened to produce deeper contrasts between black and white on the screen, whereas the fluorescent backlight of an LCD display is always on. This causes a lower contrast ratio and less detail in dark areas of the picture.
Backlighting
Standard LCD displays are backlit using fluorescent lighting. LED displays use light emitting diodes to provide the backlighting.
Color
In situations where the LCD and LED displays are both using white backlighting, the color display is equivalent. LED displays using color LEDs produce better color.
Sunlight
Murata Power Solutions notes that if the display is going to be viewed in sunlight, LCD displays will retain better properties than LED displays that become washed out in sunlight.
Contrast
the LED backlighting can be turned off behind the black areas on the screen. LCD displays will always have some degree of backlighting to interfere with contrast.
Availability
LCD displays are much more widely available in a greater number of sizes (15 to 65 inches). LED displays are typically available in sizes 46 inches and larger.
